Nick Wehry, a contestant at the Famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, has been accused of cheating during the competition. According to a report from the New York Post, which cited two anonymous sources, video footage allegedly shows Wehry adding an extra plate to his stack after the contest had ended. This action reportedly increased his score by five hot dogs. In the contest, empty plates are used to count the number of hot dogs consumed, and the report claims that Wehry was seen on video rearranging items, including plates, on the table after the event concluded.
Wehry, initially credited with eating 46.75 hot dogs, came in fourth place at the Famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. However, after a recount, it was discovered that he had actually eaten 51.75 hot dogs, as an extra plate was found. According to the New York Post, his prize for finishing fourth was $1,000.
The event is officially sanctioned by Major League Eating (MLE). Patrick “Deep Dish” Bertoletti, aged 39, won the men’s competition by consuming a total of 58 hot dogs and buns.
Wehry responded to the accusations in a text message to the Post, denying any wrongdoing. He stated that he did not steal anything and also refuted the claim that he requested a recount of his initial score. Wehry emphasized that if Major League Eating (MLE) found any error in his count, he would accept the corrected number. He insisted that his placement in the contest did not change due to this issue. Wehry expressed his integrity, asserting that he would never cheat in a competition, as it goes against his principles. He mentioned that those who know him are aware of his honesty and dedication to fair play.
According to the New York Post, Nick Wehry is married to Miki Sudo, the women’s champion of the contest. Sudo made history by eating 51 hot dogs and buns, the first female competitor to surpass the 50 hot dog mark. Sudo mentioned that she had been observing Nick throughout the competition and believes the judges accurately recorded the results, as there were cameras monitoring the event closely.
The Post reported that Major League Eating (MLE) looked into the cheating allegations but decided not to change the contest’s results.
